margaret-maultasch-medieval-14th-century-tyrolean-ruler
MARGARETE MAULTASCH — SCULPTURE

Margarete ruled Tyrol in the fourteenth century, was excommunicated over a second marriage her church would not accept, and held her territory anyway through years of interdict. Then history did something stranger than anything she did: the nickname Maultasch, of uncertain origin, was reinterpreted by later centuries as a description of her face, and she was gradually rewritten into the legend of the ugly duchess.

A grotesque portrait by Quinten Massys is traditionally, and very doubtfully, linked to her — and it is that painting Tenniel drew from for the Duchess in Alice. A sculpture of her is a small correction to six hundred years of caricature.

Printed to order in holographic silk PLA, 15 cm tall. The iridescence shifts with light and viewing angle, and no two pieces come out identical — filament variation and the printing process itself see to that. Made in France, dispatched in 2-5 business days.

The image shown is a digital visualization of the artwork; a 360° view of an actual printed sculpture is available on the site. An original artistic interpretation by designer and visual artist Antonio de Santos.
