Bogart spent a decade playing forgettable gangsters before Hollywood worked out what it had. Then came Sam Spade, Rick Blaine, Philip Marlowe — men who talk less than everyone around them and mean more. He made a trench coat and a cigarette into a grammar, and proved that a leading man could be short, weathered and faintly bitter.
What survives is a silhouette recognisable in one glance from across a room, which is exactly what a sculpture is for.
